The multi-million dollar aquatic/curling centre is coming together.

Although slightly over budget and delayed; the monthly report to council indicates everything is coming along accordingly, with no additional surprises.

Suzanne Gaida, Town of Cochrane, Senior Manger Community Services, says there are 8 months left.

"We are on schedule for most of the transition; everything except for the aquatic centre to be handed over from the construction to the town ultimately to the Spray Lakes Board, March 31, and the aquatic June 30,2017. Everything is proceeding as planned."

Gaida shares pools are being poured, and tile work is started for the aquatics area while mostly finishing work is taking place for the curling and lobby side.

Over the next few months the enclosure work will be wrapped up and the building will be totally enclosed.

Gaida, who has the pleasure of being behind the scenes on a regular basis says Cochranites will be impressed with many components of the new facility.

"I think when you walk in the facility what people will notice is it's open and it's airy. So one of the things when you build a facility this size we wanted to make sure we had space, crush space, space for people to gather and not be on top of each other. On  the curling side and multi-sport side we are pretty unique in that we're going to have such a large ice surface where we are going to have the six curling sheets plus the three junior sheets. On the aquatic side, it;s going to meet the needs of the community the eight lane- 25 metre, the wave pool with the lazy river, and then of course the therapy pool. We are one of the only public facility's in Alberta that will have this feature in it."

Another big component for the facility is to meet demands of being a host for future competitions.

"On the curling side they have bonspiels already but they will be able to have bigger bonspiels which of course the economic impact for our community is huge. On the aquatic side our current swim club don't have the option to run competitions in our current facility, there is just not enough space, this is something that they're very excited about. So we set up the facility so there is actually viewing for spectators for competitions, as well as deck space around it. The big thing is when we build the pool, tile it, and design it, the measurements have to be perfect."

Gaida will present to council monthly reports on the build until completion.
