June is Stroke Month in Canada, and this year the Heart and Stroke Foundation are stressing the FAST campaign.

FAST, or Face, Arms, Speech, and Time is an easy way to remember and recognize the signs of a stroke when it hits.

Donna Hastings, CEO of the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation says it's important to get help right away if you notice any symptoms.

"Face, is it drooping? Arms, can both arms be lifted? Speech, it is missing or slurred? Time, a stroke is a medical emergency," she says. "We need everyone to recognize it and call 911 right away."

Hastings explains when a stroke happens to an individual, typically they're not able to ask for help.

"It's important that we know FAST for our friend, family member, or colleague at work to get them help right away."

She adds a TIA, or mini stroke, must be treated right away as well. Stroke like symptoms appear briefly and then resolve within a few minutes to 24 hours, these mini strokes are a warning sign for a more major incident.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is hoping to raise $800,000 in Alberta for life saving research, through door knocking and online campaigning.
