August long weekend will bring more law enforcement officers out on the roadways.

Constable Jennifer Brewer says although the RCMP works hard all year to keep the roads safe from alcohol and other related incidents, it is a well known fact that collisions are higher on Alberta highways over long weekends.

"The Provincial Collision data indicates that driving on holiday long weekends presents a greater exposure of risks to being involved in a serious collision in a motor vehicle. A lot of that can be the congestion of the roads and highways because the increased volume is a factor."

Brewer adds due to the extra traffic she reminds residents to exercise patience.

"Given the increase volume of traffic over long weekends there will be members of the RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs out on the roads and highways keeping an eye on that. There will be an increased chance of meeting an enforcement officer."

Cst. Brewer shares they will be targeting the following causes of serious collisions.

"Driving aggressively, impaired driving, not using seat belts, and driving distracted, we will be out in full force all weekend long. So keep an eye on your speed and your driving habits and hopefully you won't meet up with us."
