There's a special treat coming for East Enders, courtesy of the community's First Responders.

Fire inspector Jeff Avery says the emergency responders agreed the East End community was the best-decorated neighbourhood during their series of parades in aid of the Cochrane Activettes hamper campaign.

"There was a couple of streets where almost every house had a couple of strands here and there. It wasn't an enormous amount, but the number of houses that had even one strand up was pretty cool," says Avery.

For their efforts, the first responders will be hosting a community barbecue for East Enders.

Avery says it will likely take place in the spring, depending upon COVID restrictions at the time.

The Glenbow neighbourhood was second the Sunset Ridge was third.

Town councillor Marni Fedeyko worked with the first responders in organizing the event.

She says the cheers, waves, signs, and even trumpeters on the routes made the parades special for first responders.

"Yes, they know that they're appreciated, but not to this extent. That's the biggest gift we can give to people who have given to us for a long time, especially during this pandemic."

She says 27 shopping carts bursting with food and nine full of toys were donated by residents from the 10 parades.

Donations were down slightly from last year, but people have been going through challenging times, she says. The many other incredible community campaigns staged throughout the holiday season will make up the difference, she believes.
