Elevated pollution levels have prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue a special air quality statement for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, and Sundre.

According to various data, PM2.5 concentration in Airdrie as of this evening is currently 11.4 times the World Health Organization's annual air quality guideline value.

Though conditions are expected to improve later tonight, some individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

"If you are experiencing symptoms, such as coughing or throat irritation, consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities until the special air quality statement is lifted. Exposure to air pollution is particularly a health concern for people with heart or breathing problems, those with diabetes, children and the elderly."

The heat warning for Airdrie and the surrounding areas also continues to be in effect.
