At around 9:20 am, September 2, Cochrane EMS and Cochrane RCMP responded to a call that a 3 year old child had been backed over in a Redwood Meadows driveway.

EMT Stuart Brideaux, AHS, Public Education Officer, says due to the nature of the little boys injuries and sheer distance to the Alberta Children's Hospital, ground crews requested STARS attend the scene.

"On the arrival, the STARS crew as well as the Cochrane crew provided some early treatment predictably for a serious lower arm injury and some other soft tissue injuries before subsequently flying him to Alberta Children's Hospital in serious but fortunately stable and non life threatening condition."

RCMP say the investigation indicates a family member was backing a work vehicle out of the driveway and struck the boy who was on his bicycle.

RCMP confirm no alcohol was involved nor do they anticipate any charges to be laid against the driver.

Brideaux says they have seen several similar incidents like this, this year.

"The biggest factor in all these cases is to of course provide as much direct supervision of your children as you can in and around vehicles. It also includes teaching them proper safety and habits, however, a young child is not always fully capable of understanding just how serious the situation can be, so the ownness falls to the vehicle operators to do their very best to ensure that when they are backing up or moving around a residential area that their path is clear."
