Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Cochrane and several other regions in southern Alberta, because strong winds and snow are on the way.

The snow, blowing snow and the sharp drop in temperatures are expected to occur Monday night.

The strong northwest winds are expected to gust up to 70 km/h starting along the central Foothills on Monday evening. They will then move to the southeast and get stronger throughout the evening. The winds are then expected to gust up to 90 km/h, but should ease off by Tuesday morning.

During the windy period, we can expect rain or snow. As a result, visibility may be reduced suddenly or even be reduced to zero.

Because of the temperature drop, wet surfaces may freeze which can lead to icy conditions.

Motorists are being reminded to use caution when driving.

Other areas included in the special weather statement include:

  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre
  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
  • Rocky View Co. near Bottrel and Madden
