The Cochrane Public Library is offering an incredible array of programming for young and old this fall.

More than just books on shelves, the Cochrane Public Library continues to transform into a multimedia destination encouraging young and old to get creative.

The library launched their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Math) programming in spring which has been a huge success. Jeri Maitland, Cochrane Public Library, Executive Director, shares they want to see kids become more hands on.

"We are finding kids have lost the art of fine motor skills. Things like, putting an elastic band on a popsicle stick and making something that can fly or those tactile things like a needle and thread and sewing something together; kids aren't getting that in school so we are here to fill the gap in those areas."

Andrea Johnston, Cochrane Public Library, Librarian adds the STEAM program encourages kids to tap into their imagination, "Plus enhance creativity, and just getting kids away from the screen, that is our focus."

The next enhancement the library is launching, shares Maitland and Johnston, is their learning labs.

"It is a goal we have had in the back of our minds for the last year. It is going to be a mobile/flexible space, it's going to have new furniture installed, computers, green screens, pod casting equipment, robotics, graphic novel creation software, electronic gizmos, the latest gaming systems, and virtual realty gaming -we are looking at getting an Oculus Rift put in here."

Maitland says the focus it to create a space and central hub for all ages.

"We are hoping to draw in teens, young adults, parents, grandparents that want to come in and learn. I think it is going to be an awesome experience for everybody."

The library continues to transform and rebrand, showcasing it's new logo at the Cochrane Labour Day Parade and promote it's new tag line, 'Where Will It Take You?'

Maitland adds the tag is perfect, summing up everything they want the library to be, "We want people to start thinking of libraries as exploratory places of vision and inspiration."
