Federal Environment and Climate Change minister Jonathan Wilkinson has approved the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir (SR1) project, checking off another item on the list of approvals required for the flood/drought mitigation project to proceed.

Wilkinson announced his approval on July 8, based upon the findings of the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada. Its environmental assessment concluded the proposed project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects when mitigation measures are taken into account.

"I am confident the strong legally-binding conditions established for the project will safeguard the environment for years to come, and also ensure Albertans can be protected from future flooding events," states Wilkinson in a news release. "

Alberta Transportation now has the authority to seek approvals from Fisheries and Oceans Canada under the Fisheries Act and Transport Canada under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.

The Impact Assessment Agency states it will enforce the conditions listed in the minister's decision statement before construction, during construction, and throughout the life of the project. Failure to comply with these conditions is a violation of federal law.
