Filling up will cost you more at the pumps later this week and into the foreseeable future.

Hurricane Harvey's path of destruction over refinery row in Houston will cause gas prices to soar.

Dan McTeague, Senior Petroleum Analyst for Gas Buddy, says with a portion of gasoline production shut in the US, he predicts motorists can expect to be hit with a substantial fuel price hike.

"I think it's a good and safe bet that you are going to see prices move up probably about 8c/L and that is likely going to happen before the long weekend. Retailers are now waking up to reality that their wholesale prices for gasoline has now moved up to 95, 96 cents. At 97.9 they are not really able to recoup their cost of operations and honouring credit cards and the like, so I would think 105.9c/L looks like the new number perhaps a little higher. Calgary will obviously go first and that will set it in motion."

As far as long range predictions on how long we may be impacted, McTeague, says it would be presumptuous to guess as the storm continues to slam the Gulf coast. "The damage could be very extensive; and we are not really nor is anyone else, really in a position to do a proper assessment of how many refineries that are offline will remain offline. We also know there is a threat of further flooding and heavy rains associated with  this storm which are pounding the same area and perhaps moving east before it starts to move north and track into the midwest of the US. There is likelihood that many more refineries may join closing down almost as a precaution but also recognizing they can't manage a heavy flood with no personnel, electrical problems and an inability to bring in crews to process, export and remove refined products from their facilities."

While we don't have a made at home Canadian oil price and pay and receive world prices for all of our commodities such as oil, gasoline, and diesel, there is little we can do to resolve the issues.

McTeague feels this could be just the beginning, and prices could continue to rise throughout September.
