Due to extremely dry conditions and high winds, a fire ban is now in effect in Cochrane.

That means no campfires, backyard firepits, burning of wood products, or charcoal briquettes allowed.

Gas or propane stoves/barbecues and portable propane firepits are allowed.

Fire inspector Jeff Avery says the ban will be in effect until further notice.

"It's been so dry and we've experienced such strong, strong winds for almost a week straight now that we definitely want to be proactive. We don't want to take away anyone's fun for the Long Weekend, but we want to make sure all residents in Cochrane are safe, and we're not starting any grass fires."

Firefighters of Cochrane Fire Services are among those fighting a wildfire 15 km west of town.

No evacuations have been ordered for Cochrane residents from the fire in Rocky View County at this writing.
