In her daily COVID 19 update on Friday, Dr Deena Hinshaw reported the first case in a correctional facility. The individual had been exposed to the virus before arriving at the Calgary Remand Centre. Hinshaw says it is a story of how all precautions were done correctly. The individual was admitted directly into a quarantine unit upon arrival. He did not report any symptoms and was placed with one other also individual not showing any symptoms. The newly admitted individual started feeling unwell the next evening at which time both were placed in isolation. The facility has proactively implemented outbreak processes as a precaution.

Dr Hinshaw says due to the impending relaunch, she will be reporting numbers a little differently as it is important to watch the number of hospitalizations and those in ICU to gauge the ability to relaunch. Today's numbers were as follows.

  • 3232 tests performed in the last 24 hours
  • 81 new cases
  • 80 hospitalizations with 17 in ICU
  • 1 death bringing the total deaths to 155
  • 678 confirmed cases in continuing care facilities
  • 4020 recovered cases

Dr Deena encourages outdoor activities but with proper distancing. Camping will be allowed on the long weekend. She spoke to the issue of travelling to summer homes and cottages within Alberta.

"Responsible travel to these locations withing the province is permissible with consideration to local community guidelines. Travel to summer homes outside the province is still NOT recommended. I encourage any person who is considering travelling within the province, to respect the health and safety of small communities and plan their trip with minimal stops where possible. PacK your own food and stop for gas only if necessary. As always take all the necessary precautions to protect your health and the health of those around you."

In conclusion Dr Hinshaw wished all mothers a Happy Mother's Day. "I know this year will feel a little different but I hope ;you can find time and ability to connect with your loved ones even if it is in a different way."
