Cochrane Fire Services responded to a house fire at a residence along Highway 22, north of Toyota, across from Rolling Range Drive on Monday afternoon.

Fire Inspector Jeff Avery says when crews arrived the garage was fully engulfed and the fire was quickly spreading to the rest of the home.

Avery says "There were five people home at the time of the fire and they all got out safely. They got all of the family pets out except for one dog and unfortunately that dog perished in the fire, but everybody else is safe."

Once they were able to get water established they were able to knock the fire down very quickly.

Avery says because it is an older home the flames spread quite quickly.

The home is considered a total write-off.

There were five fire trucks including the aerial truck and two engines from Cochrane and two engines from Rocky View County with a total of 20 firefighters at the scene.

Avery says it's too hot to investigate tonight so they're letting it cool down overnight and will investigate in the morning.

Foul play is not suspected.
