Cochrane gardeners will be happy to hear that the Eco Centre's 'Free Compost' program is a go this year!

To much dismay, the popular events had to be cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Fabrizio Bertolo is the Manager of Waste & Recycling with the Town of Cochrane and he says that they are excited to offer this program to Cochranites again this year and for residents to reap the benefits of composting.

"We do this because we want to thank residents for their participation in the organics program and to show the benefits of the program," says Bertolo. "So we can turn waste - organics waste in this case into something very rich in nutrients and very great in our gardens."

Bertolo says that the event will run a little differently this year to comply with COVID protocols.

"We won't be allowed to provide any tools to the residents," says Bertolo. "They will need to come up with their shovels, their bags, their containers. We will only allow a few cars at a time going into the compost area, this is again for COVID protocols."

Gardeners can look forward to helping themselves to up to two large pails of compost.

"Each family is going to be allowed to get up to 40 litres or 30 kilograms of compost per family," says Bertolo.

There will be two 'Free Compost events, so mark your calendars for Saturday, May 1 and May 15, 2021.

The events will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days and they'll take place in the overflow parking lot of the RancheHouse.
