It's bigger than a bread box, much bigger.

But the exact dimensions of the huge cenotaph donation box being unveiled at the Cochrane Community Cenotaph on Oct. 7 at noon are being kept hush-hush by Dan Kroffat and designer Roy Genung.

What Kroffat has elaborated upon is the cause. For $5,000, he says, the long-awaited finishing touches can be added to the spectacular cenotaph park located adjacent to the Cochrane branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on 5th Ave.

"Complete the Cenotaph" is a two-week fundraising blitz that Kroffat is confident will raise the funds needed. The $200,000 cenotaph park was designed by OnGrowing Works and was intended to be completing in two stages. The first stage centred upon the magnificent bronze statue of a First World One soldier by the internationally-acclaimed sculptor Don Begg and Studio West Foundry. There were funds raised to complete most of the second stage but not enough to install three park benches, a naming rock, and some finishing aesthetics.

CenotaphDon Begg and Studio West created the magnificent bronze statue that graces the cenotaph.

Kroffat has already lined up three businesses who will be hosting the huge collection box. On Oct. 12, it will be located at Cochrane's McDonalds. The restaurant will be making a donation based upon sales that day. On Oct. 14-15, it will be located at Cochrane Toyota and it will make an appearance at Coffee Traders on Oct. 19. Other locations may be announced.

Some extensive homework has done in advance of constructing this type of collection box, says Kroffat, and he is confident it is hands-down the largest of its kind in Canada

"It's bigger than a bread box," he confirms. "Is it big enough to be a house for your dog? It probably is but the only way you're going to find out is to come down to the cenotaph park on Monday at noon."

That invitation is extended to the entire community.

"Nobody has a bigger one," says Kroffat, "It's a beautiful box and every dime of the money collected will be used to complete the cenotaph park."

On Oct. 21, Kroffat will return to the cenotaph to unlock the box and announce the amount raised.

Kroffat says CFL Hall of Famer Jon Cornish and MP Blake Richards will be among the guests.
