Loosen up your throwing arm, because the bocce season is about to start in Cochrane.

Soon local players will be throwing ball busters, making pac man shots and placing horizontal mambos. You might even hear the odd shout of "Casino!" when a team takes all four points in one frame.

Just how steep players are in the sport doesn't particularly matter. The main idea is to come out and enjoy a sociable fun-loving atmosphere. Plus, it's free.

Joey Hyde-Wilson, of the bocce league, says they anticipate returning in mid-May to the Bow RiverEdge Campground, by the SLS Family Sports Centre, for casual league play that's open to everyone. Once it starts they'll be games on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Friday at 11:30 a.m. Play continues until September.

Teams are drawn up at each session, so you don't need to come as a team. Campers in the RV Park also have an open invitation, says Joey, and sometimes locals has been joined by visiting singles and couples.

The roots of bocce date back to the Roman Empire and has been refined over time. It remains a popular recreational pursuit and besides league play here in Cochrane is also enjoyed in backyards and parks as family summer fun.

The bocce league is in its third season.
