If you're on Main Street Saturday night and hear some country tunes, you may want to follow the music.

Many Cochranites enjoy a good country dance, and this weekend is an opportunity to attend one in the middle of Historic Main Street.

The first ever Dancing in the Streets event will be held on Saturday Aug. 20, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Centennial Plaza. Jola Muran, Town of Cochrane Arts & Culture Programmer, says the idea came from some far away communities.

"The event was inspired by various areas in Europe, and more closely, Kelowna, where they host a dancing in the park on a weekly basis, so we thought we'd give it a try," she explains. "We have a dance instructor that's going to be teaching modern country style dancing with a professional sound system."

A large group dance class may seem intimidating to some, but Muran says it's not about the skill, it's about the fun.

"Just come to watch, and if you find you are toe tapping, then you're going to be the one that wants to jump in and join. We're not asking for professional dancers to come out, it's definitely for everyone to enjoy music in the street and dancing."

She's hoping for a good turnout at the pilot project, which would help the program grow in the future.

"It's in the fresh air, and there will be sun still at that hour, and it will be cool enough where we'll really be able to shake it up and get active."
