A Cochrane resident is reaching out to the public to help give a healthy, senior dog a fighting chance at living out a full, happy life.

Meko is a bichon cross whose long-time owner has had to relinquish care due to her own significant health challenges.

Sandra Scott, a resident, advocating on behalf of the owner who is currently supported by AISH, says the senior dog was truly a lifesaver for the lovely Cochrane lady. "She does have significant medical issues that are degenerative, and this little dog has been her main companion. With no family close and many trips to the hospital; I have organized a foster to take care of the dog."

Finding a foster who lives on the lady's same street has been incredible, shares Scott, and initially, they thought a solution had been found. "Helping Hands, FCSS, and Arrowhead Vet helped with the initial vet costs so that he could be at the new foster's house. Everything seemed to be great until we got the diagnosis that Meko had a bladder stone."

Although Meko is an older dog, he is extremely healthy and happy, says Scott. "If he was my dog, I would want to be able to take care of the surgery too. It is very uncomfortable and can become life-threatening if we don't."

Unfortunately, the full cost for Meko's surgery and follow up medication is estimated at 3,200 dollars, which is beyond the owner's financial ability. "Arrowhead is trying to get the costs down, but at this point, we are just asking if there is anyone out there that would like to help donate. The surgery is booked for early October, and Arrowhead will put off payment until we have it."

With Cochrane being such an animal-loving community, Scott is hopeful Meko's bill will be covered. "Pets are members of our family, and I am a strong advocate for helping older people wanting to keep their animal. One of our biggest problems we hear about is when seniors or those with medical issues feel isolated. So if we can help them not feel depressed or isolated, I think we should."

It is not anticipated that Meko will face any other health challenges enabling the dog to visit his owner on a weekly basis once again.

Donations to offset surgery costs for Meko can be made at Arrowhead Veterinary Centre or through a Facebook Fundraising page, which you can find HERE.

Lastly, Scott graciously gives thanks to all the agencies who have helped thus far.
