Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie says there's been strong support for concerns he expressed leading up to the United Conservative Party (UCP) AGM last weekend.

At the government's Nov. 15 caucus meeting, he delved into internal maneuvers he believes have taken the party away from its grassroots. He believes it has distracted the government from dealing with matters that are more important to Albertans.

"The feedback that I received from members was all very positive, as well as from my board. I got very strong support from all of the above. I think my thoughts going into the AGM are very similar going out."

One issue at the heart of his concern was a motion hitting the floor at the AGM that would have made it more difficult to push forward a review of Kenney’s leadership. Twenty-two constituency associations (CA) are seeking the review to place before Mar. 1, 2022 and allow for one vote per member. A motion to raise that threshold to 29 CAs was defeated at the AGM.

The newly-elected UCP board will be determining if the request of the 22 CAs will be accepted.

Currently, the leadership review is scheduled to take place Apr. 8-9 in Edmonton.
