Our beautiful home, the province of Alberta turns 111 years young today!

Alberta was once a district of the Northwest Territories, and officially became a province on Sept. 1, 1905.

Banff-Airdrie MLA Cameron Westhead says Alberta has grown immensely since it's founding over a century ago.

"We've got a long history here in this province starting with the first nations people who have lived on the land for many, many generations, the earliest settlers and Metis, and of course newcomers that we all welcome bringing their different cultures, and backgrounds to our province," he says. "It just makes us a stronger province, it's a great place to live and raise a family"

Westhead shares while the province has a very interesting history, it also has a fascinating and vibrant future ahead of it as well.

Alberta Culture and Tourism Minister Ricardo Miranda says our our story can be found everywhere, etched into the landscape, preserved in museums, and in the dynamics of our towns, cities, and villages.

“The creativity, ingenuity and hard work of successive generations of Albertans have become our hallmark," he says. "This indomitable spirit has seen us through the many challenges that Alberta has faced. It has also contributed to the development and transformations of our province into a world-class destination where people come to visit, live, work and play."
