Look up tonight, as the 2016 Harvest Moon makes its appearance.

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, which is on Thursday, September 22.

The moon will be coloured in reds and oranges tonight due to its closeness to the horizon.

It will peak at 5:05 p.m. MST, stargazers and skywatchers will be able to see many parts of the moon in detail without a telescope.

The moon will rise about 30 minutes later from one night to the next, farmers across the Northern Hemisphere have long used the extra moonlight to harvest their fall crops.
