Honestly, the town has no interest in the personal information or belongings you throw into your garbage bins when they start their waste cart audits this week.

What they are interested in is reviewing the placement, preparation and contents of residential waste, recycling and organics carts out for collection.

There was alarm expressed by some residents when the town last embarked upon the audit, but Waste and Recycling manager Fabrizio Bertolo assures there's no need for concern over invasion of privacy.

"It's something we did last year and we like to do as much as possible," says Bertolo. "It's an educational tool to try and teach the residents and let them know if something is not being done properly with their cart. It was successful last year and hopefully we'll have good results."

Carts with inappropriate material will get information stickers with details of the review. He also encourages people to approach those involved with the audit to ask questions about waste collection. Those conducting the audit will be carrying identification.

"Residents can ask questions to our staff when they're around. If they have any doubt about the material that can or cannot go in the cart, how to place the cart, how to prepare the cart for collection."

The reviews will be conducted randomly over several months.

The push is on in the Calgary region to properly sort waste and eliminate all compostibles and recyclable products from black bins. By fall 2019 Calgary intends to ban organics from their landfills, where Cochrane garbage is delivered.
