Cochrane RCMP were kept busy over the August long weekend.

Constable Jennifer Brewer says the Cochrane RCMP detachment received over 200 service calls.

"Of those calls, 20 were collisions, four of the collisions resulted in the occupants needing medical attention. However many of these resulted in violation tickets being issued because someone in the collision had caused it by not following the rules of the road."

Brewer says one of the collisions on Highway 1 resulted in injuries.

"There was a four vehicle collision where vehicles were following too closely and therefore ran into each other. Three people were taken to hospital in that collision itself. We are still investigating as people were taken to the hospital."

Social media was abuzz about passersby not moving out of the way of emergency vehicles on Highway 1; Brewer says unfortunately they do encounter this quite a bit.

"We do come into a number of situations where we are trying to get through and people just don't move out of our way. It is very difficult for us to get to where we need to go if vehicles aren't moving. Sometimes you need to put yourself in the situation of who's calling us, how would you feel if we can't get to you because someone won't obey the rules of the road."

Brewer says not only can you be ticketed if you don't move, but sometimes when you aren't expecting it.

"There are fines they can face; we do have in car videos which if they are running we are able to go back and look at the footage, get license plates, and can go back after the fact and issue these tickets."

On top of the accidents RCMP handed out three impaired charges and one 72 hour suspension, unfortunately for some the message is not getting through.

"Everyone has different tolerances when it comes to alcohol;  people just don't always realize you really have crossed the line, you have gone above and beyond, and you shouldn't be driving at this point."

On top of accidents, and alcohol related charges, RCMP are still tallying regular traffic violations from the weekend.

Brewer adds that although the call number was high, there were no fatalities or other serious incidents over August long.

"It was quite busy with the 200 calls, and then of course we see a lot of traffic because of the holiday. However, it could have gotten a lot worse, we are very lucky that  nothing serious happened over the weekend.  There were no serious collisions and no serious calls for service on the other side of our investigation. So all in all we were lucky. "
