Cochrane High’s Symphonic Band and Choir are set to perform as part of the Festive Showcase Concert at the Southern Alberta Jubliee Auditorium.

Along with Several Calgary bands, the high school students will be performing as special guests for this event.

April Waterbury, Cochrane Highschool Music Director/Conductor, says the students are ecstatic to be invited back to play in the concert again.

“We thought it was sort of a once in a lifetime opportunity last year. To get the call again this year was definitely, extremely, exciting and we feel very privileged to be able to perform in such a beautiful venue.”

The Symphonic Band will be playing three selections. One is a piece by Shostakovich called Galop, another is By Loch and Mountain by Robert W. Smith and the third ,Waterbury adds, is called Foundry by John Mackie which is truly unique.

“It’s actually based on found percussion instruments. So a lot of our percussion section is playing on kitchen bowls and pieces of rail road track. One of our students actually has real metal punches from a blacksmith metal shop and he is hitting those punches with rail road spikes.”

The students went out in the community and acreages to find these different percussive ideas that aren’t typical concert instruments.

The Cochrane High’s Choir will also be singing three pieces led by Choir Director, Jander Talen.

The concert begins at 7:30 P.M. on November 30.
