The Cochrane and Area Humane Society is in urgent need of a new shelter van after a bad accident.

The shelter had a volunteer heading up to Lloydminister for part of its Rural Rescue and Support Program, which helps other rescues that don't have humane societies, it was in an accident and the van and trailer rolled multiple times.

Cochrane and Area Humane Society Fund Development Officer Jaimie Anton says thankfully the volunteer is okay, but the van and trailer are write-offs.

"She's a little bit banged up, but she'll be out of the hospital today, it's pretty scary stuff," she says. "The van is a complete write-off, we're thinking the trailer is as well, we're just waiting to hear back from insurance, but we're guessing it is as well by the looks of things."

Anton explains the loss of the shelter van has put the Humane Society in a tough situation for transportation.

"As you can imagine the shelter van is used on a daily basis, for vet runs, rescues, and support, certainly we're in a bit of bind here."

The Humane Society has had a generous donor step forward, who will match any funds raised for a new van and trailer up to $12,500.

They are also hoping there may be a dealership in town that would like to partner with them.
