You don't get much more Canadian then sitting on the ice with a fishing pole.

We are smack dab in the middle of the ice fishing mecca. With the surrounding lakes full of lake trout, aggressive bull trout, northern pike, walleye, arctic grayling, rainbow trout, perch or whitefish, it is no wonder Southern Alberta is wildly popular for this Canadian pastime.

You can initially get started for less than $100 or go for all the bells and whistles, spending much more.  The basic equipment needed is an auger, fishing rod, and reel with some lures.  Some ice fishers will have pop up tents, heaters, sonars, or just simply lay on the ice. Warm waterproof clothes and something to block the wind is always nice to have.

Doug Massig, Owner, Ice Fishing Alberta says people who are new to ice fishing need to familiarize themselves with ice safety and the do's and don't s. He says the best way to do that is to go out with an experienced ice fisher the first few times or with a trained guide tour group.

"Its kind of a traditional thing that Canadians do in the winter. Its fun to go punch some holes in the ice, do some fishing, have a barbecue and get some fresh air."

Ice fishing can be an all day family fun activity, and with being so inexpensive and accessible, it is worth a try. If you are looking for places to go around Cochrane, click here.
