Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement are currently investigating a suspected fatal bear attack that took place on private land southwest of Water Valley.

Fish and wildlife officers were notified of the situation by RCMP On May 25 at approximately 7 p.m. Officers are currently on-site investigating and placing traps. While the identity of the bear has yet to be confirmed, a grizzly bear and cub have been spotted in the area.

Residents of Water Valley are being reminded to be extra vigilant, travel in groups, and carry bear spray while spending time outdoors.

If you are ever put in a situation where you come across a bear:

• Stay calm, do not run, and stay with your group. Keep any children near.

• Asses the situation, If you see cubs or an animal carcass, the bear will want to protect them. Try and back away from them.

• If you are carrying bear spray, prepare to use it.

• Leave the area the way that you came while keeping the bear in sight. Avoid staring at it aggressively.

• Seek out a place of safety. While leaving look for places to hide such as a car or building.

• Assure the bear you are human and not prey in a soft, low voice. 

• Be prepared to defend yourself with bear spray. Prepare a noisemaker.

Residents should take precautions to lower the risk of bears from coming into residential areas.

• Garbage should be stored in bear-resistant and odor-proof containers or buildings.

• Any possible attractants should be removed immediately

• Never leave pet food outside in areas accessible to bears.

• Outdoor eating areas and barbeques should be cleaned after use

• fruit-bearing trees, gardens or shrubs also attract bears, and should be properly maintained or removed.
