Cochrane's Jett Hasiuk has advanced to today's 400m final in the Royal Canadian Legion's Youth National Track and Field Championship in Sherbrooke, QC.

Yesterday, he ran a personal best of 49.6 seconds to finish first in preliminaries, breaking the 50-second mark for the first time.

Competing in 75 per cent humidity in 28-degree Celsius heat added to the challenge.

He's now ranked number one after entering the championship ranked sixth nationally.

Hasiuk is one of two Cochrane area athletes at the nationals.

Today, Erik Solomon is competing in U16 javelin, ranked second nationally, and the U16 long jump.

Cochrane High's Esther Sieben, also with the Calgary Warriors, is one of the coaches for Team Alberta.
