Summer slide may sound like fun but when it comes to reading it is something you do not want your kids to play with.

Head Librarian / Assistant Director of the Cochrane Public Library, Andrea Johnston explains, “What the summer slide is when kids don’t read they actually lose a grade level of reading comprehension skills and that effects of course math and day to day and that’s why we want to help encourage kids as much as possible to keep reading and win some very cool prizes.”

Yes. the summer reading program at the Cochrane Public Library is available to prevent the summer slide. Johnston says, “The TD Summer Reading Club is back for another year and we are really excited this year because we have all the official paraphernalia. Last year TD didn’t want to send anything out just because of the pandemic, which is totally understandable. But it’s back and just like it used to be.” You can sign-up online and get your official notebook from the library to start reading and earning prizes.

Johnston says, “What’s great about the program is that they can read anything they want. They can read picture books, they can read graphic novels, listen to audiobooks whatever gets them excited is good to go.”

Once a child fills a page in the notebook, they can go to the library and choose from a treasure chest of great prizes. Once the notebook is filled, they can put their name into the grand prize draw. The added bonus is they can choose which grand prize they want to put their name in for.  Some of the prizes up for grabs include a scooter, a Nintendo Switch Lite, Lego, spy kit, craft kits, a high-end telescope, and a whole bunch more. It’s not just for kids either, the library also has a challenge for teens and there are prizes for them to win as well including shopping sprees and gift cards.

For those that are more comfortable sticking with the virtual program, that is still available online. However, the Cochrane Public Library is thrilled to be fully open to patrons once again and encourages everyone young and old to come in and take part in the Summer Reading Program and explore other programs available.

There will be some other summer programming held through the library this summer which will be kept virtual for now just to be extra safe. If parents are looking for things to do, it is all drop-in. Johnston says, “There’s going to be some fun stuff, we are going to trivia and cartooning, and creative writing and we are also going to make up some great take-home kits. So, if parents are interested follow us on social media to see what we are going to be offering each week, and then come on in and grab some fun activities or sign on and join in on one of our programs.”

Rest assured the Cochrane Public Library is available help to combat summer-time boredom and prevent the summer slide.
