We are learning more information about the fatal officer-involved shooting over the weekend in Cochrane.

Cochrane RCMP along with members from the Calgary Police Service responded to a home on West Gissing Road shortly after 7 p.m. on December 6 after receiving concerning information from two separate people about the behavior and recent messages sent by the 28-year-old man

Officers were advised that the man was bound by a condition prohibiting him from being in possession of firearms but that he did have several firearms in the home.

When officers arrived at the home their intent was to arrest the man for breach of his release conditions and remove access to the firearms.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the residence was armed with a firearm when officers arrived.

He refused to surrender and the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called out and did obtain a warrant to enter the home to arrest the man.

Officers were able to establish phone contact with the man but they weren't able to negotiate with the man to get him to surrender.

An RCMP armoured vehicle pulled up to the back of the home to the overhead vehicle door to the attached garage.

Shortly after that there was approximately five to six shots believed to have been fired from inside the garage, through the garage vehicle door into the direction of the armoured vehicle.

In the early morning hours of December 7 ERT officers deployed a chemical agent into the home.

Only moments later, at 1:40 a.m. the man walked out of the home and a confrontation occurred between officers and the man which resulted in an officer discharging his firearm.

The 28-year-old man was struck and fell down.

He was given emergency medical aid before being transported to hospital by ambulance but he did not survive.

A loaded .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle was recovered from the snow close to where the man fell.

Bullet holes in the overheard vehicle garage door were found along with seven spent shell casings that were found inside the garage.

There were six bullet holes found on the garage of a nearby residence.

After searching the home there were two other guns and additional ammunition recovered.

ASIRT is continuing to investigate what led up to this incident including doing interviews with witnesses.

The mans name has not been released.
