Cochrane RCMP have charged a man with possession of a controlled substance after responding to a call of vehicles stunting, and doing donuts in the parking lot at the Cochrane Arena, on Aug. 7.

When officers arrived on scene, the vehicles were still there but had been parked, while speaking to the occupants of the truck a strong scent of marijuana could be smelled.

RCMP officers then entered into a drug investigation, resulting in the seizure of less than 30 grams of marijuana.

The male occupant of the vehicle was charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and released on scene, he is set to appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on Aug. 30.

Sergeant Jennifer Brewer, Cochrane RCMP, says driving carelessly is a serious offense.

"Your vehicle, especially trucks could easily flip, so you're looking at the very least injuring yourself," she says. "You can even look at Criminal Code charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, not just the Traffic Safety Act ones; which is a pretty hefty fine. It's a pretty serious thing, we have a lot of vehicles that get damaged because rocks are being kicked up, and there are times when it results in a collision, and there are injuries and fatalities."

She adds the situation could have gone a lot worse for the driver if the officers on scene were able to observe the driving patterns prior to their arrival.

"They could  have also be entered into an investigation for impaired operation, so this could have gone a lot worse for the driver. It was just luck that at that point in time, the evidence the member saw only amounted to a possession charge."
