Rob McNab is starting his 30th season as co-head coach of the Cochrane Cobras and is in his 34th year of teaching.

It's hard to talk about, but the hall of fame coach is taking his role with the Cobras on a year-to-year basis.

McNab is nearing the end of his teaching career, and he says there are several different scenarios to consider for his future role with the Cobras.

"I can see this being my last year as a teacher for sure, and maybe as a coach. This might be the last hurrah."

"If this is it, I want to go out coaching. I didn't want to go out practicing like we did last year."

McNab has countless honours for his work in football, both as a player and as a coach, but he's proudest of his work with the Cobras.

"I've seen many many kids go through the program and we're quite proud of the culture that we've built. That 'C' on the helmet is something that I brought in years ago, and that means everything to me right there."

In the meantime, Derek Cooper has been named assistant offensive coordinator to McNab.

"It's hard for me to give up because I've been doing it for 30 years, but I've got to give it up to him because he's the future of the team."

Before we get too worked up, there's a provincial championship to defend, and you can be sure McNab isn't about to let anything distract him from that goal.

The Cobras open their season tonight against the Bert Church Chargers at 4:30 p.m. on the SLS Legacy Sports Field.
