Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie will not only be campaigning for federal Conservative Blake Richards, but he's also taking aim at election rule changes that he believes restrict freedom of speech.

This week, Alberta Premier and UCP leader Jason Kenney gave the green light for his MLAs to actively support the federal Conservative candidates in the current election, providing it was on their own time and own dime.

Guthrie didn't shy away from the opportunity and continues to be vocal about his disapproved of the federal Liberal government.

"I'll be out this weekend helping Blake Richards campaign," says Guthrie, "and I intend on maybe doing a little bit to help out in Edmonton, perhaps Edmonton-Strathcona."

Guthrie has been critical of election rule changes he believes limits his ability to criticize the Trudeau government. He released a video last week detailing the challenges of promoting his anti-Trudeau views on Facebook. Facebook said he was not allowed to advertise posts on social issues, elections or politics running up to the election. With great difficulty, he has since received approval but believes no one should have to go through these hoops.

"Our democracy is now in the hands of American left-wing social media corporate tech companies," he said in a video posted last week. "This is censorship, this is censorship by the state and it's the Trudeau Liberals controlling the debate over some of the most important issues facing our country and our province because they are too afraid to let their record stand on its own.

"This is wrong. This is an afront to our democracy," he continues. "This needs to be rectified. Free speech is paramount to our country and Trudeau should not be allowed to change that."

Guthrie expects to release a second video shortly, perhaps even today, on other election rule changes he opposes. A third one is in the works to be released in a few weeks in support of the Conservatives.
