The Alberta government has expanded the eligibility parameters for COVID-19 vaccine booster shots.

As of tomorrow, Wednesday, July 20, 2022, Albertans 18 years of age and older can book a second booster (or fourth dose) of the COVID-19 vaccine.

It is anticipated that the province will see an increased transmission of COVID-19 throughout the summer and into the fall hence the decision to expand vaccination eligibility.

The Omicron BA.5 variant is the most prevalent strain in Alberta at this time and since it is more transmissible than other strains, expanding the availability of the second COVID-19 vaccine booster will provide added protection, particularly for at-risk Albertans.

Tomorrow, Albertans 18 years and older can book appointments for a second booster dose (or fourth shot) of mRNA vaccine as long as it has been five months since receiving their first booster dose.

Minister of Health, Jason Copping says, "As we continue to live with COVID, vaccines remain critical to lowering your risk of severe outcomes and protecting our health-care system. Albertans are encouraged to continue to get their first booster and to consider their unique circumstances when making choices about the second booster.”

Appointments can be made online by using the Alberta vaccine booking system or by calling 811.

Select pharmacies will be accepting walk-in appointments.
