Every year we hear about the most popular baby names in Alberta, but we never talk about pet names. 

So Rover.com decided to tally up the most popular dog and cat names in Calgary.

Top 5 female dog names:

There's some interesting stats to go along with the most popular names as there were a lot of cats named Lucifer and the number of cats named Vader increased in 2021.

Not surprisingly, TV-themed names saw an upswing in numbers. A lot of pet owners used names from Schitt’s Creek, naming their cats Moira, Mutt, Twyla, and David.

Travel names were on the rise as well. Maybe it's because people were stuck at home and dreaming of other destinations, but names like Chicago, London and Everest made the list for popular cat names and the name Phoenix grew by 197 per cent in popularity for dogs.

Food names were also on the rise. Nacho, Mango and Cinnamon gained momentum and dogs named Nugget grew in popularity by 697 per cent. 

Names like Pfizer, COVID and Zoom grew substantially in popularity in the United States.
