Cochrane RCMP say many tickets were given out over May Long weekend.

Sergeant Darleen White says crummy weather kept many people around home or brought campers back early.

Sgt. White says many members of the RCMP as well as the traffic unit were out making sure motorists were abiding the law.

"Cochrane detachment issued approximately 70 tickets and the Cochrane Integrated Traffic Unit issued 141, and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and Inspection were also out and they issued about 50 tickets.

White comments that people are just not getting the message.

The charges included 4 impaired, one 24 hour suspension, 133 speeding, and others mostly from vehicle equipment violations.

While White says the numbers are comparable to last year, she would love to see that number go down.

"People aren't getting the message and for May Long weekend it seems to be like it is the start of the summer and the start of the season for everybody, so I don't know if  that has something to do with it and they just don't want to pay attention or follow the rules of the law."
