The Recent news that that Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer is resigning has been a shock to many.

Scheer's resignation comes as a direct result of allegations that he was using Conservative Party money to pay for his children's private schooling.

Blake Richards is the MP for the Banff Airdrie Riding and says the news came as a shock to the conservatives, but he thinks it was the right choice.

"There was a lot of internal conflict within the party about whether he should stay or go. I think what this does, is allow the party to move forward and choose a leader that will lead us into the next election and that's where we really need to be focused. At the end of the day, we were going to be facing that conflict leading up to this convention that we would have had in April, and that would have taken away from our ability to be the best opposition that we can be. It's a minority parliament and we have an opportunity to work together and get things done for Canadians and we really need to be focused on that. I was quite concerned, to be honest about the division we were seeing within the party over whether we needed to have our leadership reviewed or not. This takes away that division and allows us to build for the future. I really think this is the best thing for the party."

In a public statement announcing his decision to resign as leader, Scheer did not address the concerns raised.

Richards hasn't confirmed these allegations.

Andrew Scheer will stay on as leader until his replacement is chosen and continue to serve as MP for Regina.
