The iconic Cochrane Labour Day Weekend is about to get even better with the announcement of a brand new festival.

Cochrane Discovery Days is an initiative of Explore Cochrane and is all about celebrating Cochrane's rich cultural heritage with historical reenactments, events and celebrations.

Callandra Caufield, Executive Director with Explore Cochrane says the new festival is all about building on the strong legacy of that weekend in town.

“We're taking that the long-established Cochrane Rodeo and of course, the Labour Day parade and we're just adding activities to that weekend so that there is a full four days of activities for residents and visitors to enjoy. And we're excited to be collaborating with nine different community organisations to bring it all together.”

Experiences will include western wood branding, a hands-on activity where you can create your own branded wood keepsake, and an Old-Fashioned Carnival, featuring classic games and activities for children of all ages.

There will be an authentic tipi village to showcase traditional Indigenous culture and storytelling or participants can join a hosted shuttle bus to the vibrant Stoney Pow Wow to learn about traditional dances and celebrations.

Take a history tour on a giant group bicycle to explore Cochrane's past and there will be spontaneous performances by roving historical actors and musicians throughout downtown

“I'm going to use the word edu-tainment," says Caufield. "You're going to learn things but have fun. It really is a full four days of activities.”

Cochrane Discovery Days runs on August 31 and September 1, 2024, as part of a four-day celebration kicking off with the rodeo on August 30 and concluding with the Labour Day parade on September 2.

A full schedule of activities and events will be released in August.
