Cochrane is now home to the Calgary Chaos, the newest team in the Alberta Female Junior Hockey League.

The team was founded by head coach Derek Loomer and assistant coach Greg Kozak, after being involved in girls hockey programs for a number of years.

"A lot of the girls that have graduated off of our midget teams have gone onto play in the AJFHL," he explains. "Over time they've been reaching out to us to see if we could get involved. We thought the best way to get involved was to enter our own team in the league."

The AJFHL was very receptive to having a new South team, it was just a matter of getting the organization built, and finding ice time to meet game requirements for the league.

"We looked throughout Calgary and ice time is really tough to come by here in the city, so we started looking at neighbouring communities where there might be a fit. The Cochrane Minor Hockey League came back to us, and with the change in the Female Elite Program in Alberta, the Bantam AAA team was moved out of Cochrane. It left a big gap we could fill within the girls hockey program."

Loomer shares the team wants to connect with the community, and raise awareness about the league, which started in 2009.

"We want to become a bit of a flagship female program for the girls in Cochrane to look up to as mentors and role models, something to aspire to. Hopefully we can build interest for the girls who want to play hockey and try to build that program there. We want to show that there is opportunity in Alberta for girls to continue playing and hit that level."

The Junior A Calgary Chaos will start try outs for the team in September, and will play at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
