New mother Melissa Gordon welcomed a baby girl into the world on Wednesday and she took to social media to share the incredible story of her daughter's birth.

Gordon went into labour on Wednesday (May 27) morning; two days past her original due date.

When she arrived at Rockyview Hospital she had dilated two centimetres and was having contractions every two minutes. She was told that she still had plenty of time before she would be ready to give birth and that she should head back home for the time being.

Just over an hour later, she knew it was time and along with her boyfriend started heading back to the hospital.

What came next could have been a scene in a movie. Gordon says that there was no time to spare.

"I thought we had enough time to get there, ten minutes out of Okotoks. Nope! I did two pushes and she was out. My boyfriend was driving, he looked over at me once and he asked if I was okay, if she was coming, and then the next minute I had the baby in my hands."

Truly a moment filled with mixed emotions, the couple reacted quickly and pulled over on the overpass connecting Highway 2 and Highway 2A.

They attempted to hail an ambulance which they had passed earlier, and in the meantime, several strangers pulled over to offer help.

Gordon says that one couple flagged down the ambulance, while another good samaritan blocked one lane of traffic to give EMS more room to work.

She says that it is a moment in time that she won't forget and that the first responders did an incredible job.

"The EMS workers were amazing, they were able to supply me with blankets and they tied off the cord to make sure she was still doing good. They did bring my boyfriend into the back of the ambulance for him to cut the cord. They made it a special, memorable moment for him too."

Gordon says that although this was certainly not part of her birth plan, the overall experience was far better than she could have ever planned for.

"I kind of couldn't think of a better birth, as weird as that sounds! I didn't have to be hooked up to monitors, I didn't have to have drugs going through my system, it was all kind of natural. My body knew what to do and my instincts kind of kicked in. For my first time birthing experience, I couldn't ask for more."

Gordon took to Facebook to thank the strangers that stopped to help her, and says in all the excitement she didn't quite get their names. She says "I didn't get any of their names, but if I did have their names, I'd take them out for dinner."

The new mother and her baby girl are both healthy and recovering at home.
