A free welcoming event this weekend is opening its doors to Cochranites who have been here for a decade or a day.

Leaves Abound from All Around is an annual newcomers event and will be hosted at BGC of Cochrane and Area this Saturday (March 11) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“It's very friendly and very casual,” describes Penelope Archer, executive director for the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee. “It's for all Cochrane area newcomers. It's a family-friendly event, there are going to be activities for kids. We're going to have some board members on hand.”

“Most importantly, we're going to have resources available for newcomers to help them feel welcome and settled in our community.”

Archer says they are putting together a resource card for all attendees so they can easily find services in Cochrane.

“We want to help folks navigate things in our community once they get here, they might have questions about, hey, I'd like to brush up my or learn English,  where can I get help to do that? I'm looking for housing. I'm looking for a job. I'm looking for mental health support.”

One of the best ways to roll out the red carpet for people new to the community is for long-time Cochranites to drop in as well.

“We welcome all folks that are interested in like an ambassador to help us welcome folks!”

“We're always looking for volunteers. We're always looking for people to participate.”
