The Seattle Thunderbirds fell short in their comeback in the WHL championship series.

Last night, the Edmonton Oil Kings raised the cup with a 2-0 win and are heading to the Memorial Cup.

The Oil Kings went ahead 3-1 in the series, but the Thunderbirds fought back to win Game Five and extend the series to six.

The T-Birds finished third in the tight US division that saw the top three teams separated by only six points. They came from behind in their last two playoff series to advance to the championship.

The Oil Kings finished 10 points ahead of the Red Deer Rebels to top the central division. Their only two home playoff losses came at the hands of Seattle.

It's a series where both team captains had roots in the Cochrane-Airdrie AAA minor hockey system. Cochrane's Ty Bauer is captain of Thunderbirds, and Airdrie's Jake Neighbours is captain of the Oil Kings. Both are now destined for the NHL.

The Memorial Cup is being hosted by Saint John, NB from June 20 to 29. The Oil Kings will play their first game on June 21 against the QMJHL Champion Shawinigan Cataractes.
