In his first game of the season with the Regina Rams, Kyle Moortgat checked off one more item on his list of aspirations for his university football career.

There remains at least one more thing he wants to accomplish before hanging up his cleats with the University of Regina team at the end of this season.

"One of my biggest goals in my last six years has been to win a playoff game," said Moortgat in a post-game interview last Friday night in Calgary. "I haven't done that yet so if I got one in my last year here it would mean a lot to me."

The Cochrane Cobras alumni kicked off the season by becoming only the 19th Ram to surpass 1,000 yards in receiving.

"I'm very confident in my game right now. I've got a minimum of four more games left in my career and I want to make the most of them.

"It's been a little emotional but that brings out my passion in my play and how much this sport means to me."

He has accumulated 217 yards on 16 receptions this season but came away empty-handed in the 20-7 loss to the Dinos.

"I don't think I had the best game today," he says. "They had very good coverage and things just weren't going well for us on the offense in the first half. We started to pick up during the second half but I was a little cold. But other guys were making huge plays and that's what matters."

While the Rams are sitting fifth in the Canada West standings with a 1-3 record, he believes they can secure a playoff berth. This weekend they're in Winnipeg to face the Manitoba Bisons, who are just one win ahead and currently hold the last playoff spot midway through the season.

Cobras alumni Erik Nusl was on the opposite side of the field on Friday night. The Dinos receiver had two receptions for 39 yards against the Rams, the longest of which was 29 yds.

Nusl has 10 receptions on the season for 109 receiving yards. He dressed for three games last year, largely seeing action as a punt returner.

After university ball, Moortgat wants a shot at continuing professionally. Last year was his draft year and free agency is now his pathway to the pros.

"It's one of my goals is to make it to camp and prove myself there."

Moortgat redshirted with the Rams in 2014 and played his first four games in 2015, largely on special teams. He made his first reception as a receiver in Calgary against the Dinos.

In 2017, he made his first Canada West playoff appearance with a fellow Cochrane Cobras alumni Bryce McKinnon. The Rams lost the game but it proved to be a breakout season for Moortgat.

In May 2018 he turned heads with his play in the annual East-West game with 52-yards on two receptions that assisted the West in a 15-14 come-from-behind win.
