Spring/summer swim club is officially over.

The Cochrane Piranhas had 18 swimmers represent the club at ASSA Provincial Championships held in Edmonton, August 19-21.

Head Coach Breanna Hendriks says although nerves may have gotten the best of some Saturday morning, all in all, they did pretty good.

"A lot of kids made Provincials last year that didn't make it last year, I think the whole demographic of our team has changed a lot. We lost a few older swimmers last year and now we've gotten a lot more younger swimmers so we've got a lot of up and coming kids. So once they're older it's going to be awesome."

Hendriks adds each year gets better as momentum builds.

"It keeps getting better and better each year as far as the all around ability of our swimmers. That is what the last two years have been about, building a strong team.

The following swimmers made medal standings:

  • Ben Barclay won gold in the boys 9&10 year old 25 meter Butterfly along with a silver medal in 50 meter Fly and a bronze medal in 50 meter Backstroke.  Ben also achieved a fifth place finish in the 100 meter Individual Medley (IM) event.
  • Sarah Nusl placed 2nd winning a silver medal in the girls 13&14 year old 50 meter Freestyle; along with third place finish in the 50 meter Backstroke and 100 meter Freestyle events.
  • Eric Swedlo placed second winning a silver medal for his swim in the 50 meter Breaststroke in the boys 13&14 year old category.  Eric also received a bronze medal in the 100 meter Breaststroke event.

Full list of results from Provincial Championships can be found here.

Hendriks is looking forward to next season, perhaps, in the new pool.

"We'll hopefully have a new pool in March, we start our season in May so the whole aspect of our team is going to change we might get a lot more kids and we might have to hire more coaches so we are going to have to see how it is going to play out but it should be exciting. We should be able to build a bigger team, every season we have a waiting list so it's going to be awesome to give all those kids who really want an opportunity to swim to have a place to swim."

Hendriks suggests if you have a youth interested in swim club for the 2017 season, you can email her directly at brehendriks527@gmail.com
