A powerplay goal by the Kayla Likuski was the difference in a matchup between the top two teams in the south division of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFML).

Last night, the Calgary Titans beat the Cochrane Chaos, 1-0, to grab first place in the south. Unless the Chaos gets a few lucky bounces, the Titans are poised to finish on top.

The Titans have won all but one game against the Chaos this season. The other ended in a deadlock after sudden death.

Despite the loss, Chaos head coach Derek Loomer was impressed with the performance of his team.

"I thought the girls played with a lot of energy. We came out and we played the game right. We had our chances and we just didn't bury them."

When a neck guard fell off a player, the Chaos was charged with a delay of game penalty. That lead to the Titans' powerplay goal.

He says goalie Kate Kowalchuk was solid between the pipes.

"I know Kate was disappointed. She was really standing on her head on the chances they had throughout the game. It's frustrating when you get that one bounce that doesn't let you set up properly, and up gets in the mesh," he says.

Titans president Craig Sparrow is thrilled with his team's performance this season.

"This is the best team we've ever had, for sure, by quite a bit," says Sparrow. "The girls are starting to play well together. They always get up for these games because these two teams are archenemies."

Tonight, the Chaos host the Edmonton Wolves. Loomer expects the Wolves to come hard. Like the Chaos, they are in a tangle for first. They are within reach of the first place Sherwood Park Steele in the north division.

"I expect they'll be ready to play. Our girls have to bounce back from this. It's almost like the Battle of Alberta. After you have that big emotional game, you've got to make sure you can lift it back up, and play the next one."

The opening whistle is at 7:30 p.m. in Totem One of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

The Chaos and Titans meet again next Sunday, Feb. 23 in the final game of the regular season. The evening before they host the Lethbridge Eagles.

Should the Chaos finish second, they will face the Lethbridge Eagles in the first round.
