The top prospective bucking horses from across Alberta will be in Cochrane this evening, to compete at the 5th annual Foothills Bucking Horse Futurity.

Those who raise bucking horses across Alberta will come to the Cochrane Lions Rodeo Grounds with three horses aged 4 to 5. The horses will be bucked with riders, and prizes will be given to the top riders, and the best teams of future bucking horses.

Jimmy Richards, Founder of the Foothills Bucking Horse Futurity says it's a nice alternative for families who want rodeo action, but don't want to attend Stampede.

"I've always had it during Stampede week," he says. "Just because all the cowboys are close by, and if somebody wanted to do something but didn't want to go into the city this is an alternative."

Richards explains the horses competing are too young to be full fledged bucking horses, which is what makes the competition so interesting.

"They're hopefully future bucking horses, they're pretty young, that's part of the competition. It's difficult to get three this age that you can count on, that's part of the difficulty to win this event. You have to have three young horses that all perform well on the same day which is hard to do until they see more seasons."

The event will feature concessions, and trick riders to perform during intermission, tickets are $10 for ages 12 and up.
