Cochrane RCMP are hoping to speak to anyone who may have information on the grass fire that occurred near the Bow Valley High School in the Riversong community during the afternoon of Apr.28.

The fire was lit on private property. It came dangerously close to some homes, and damaged some backyard fences, says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

"With this grass fire, it was very fortunate that the fire department was able to be on scene very quickly and get it under control because it was going towards houses very quickly. There were residents with garden hoses keeping it away from their property line. It could have been a very serious situation."

He says it was man-caused.

"There were some people seen in the area and we believe that this fire, maybe not intentionally, maybe intentionally, was definitely a man-made fire," says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff of the Cochrane RCMP.

He says residents of the area are very concerned about fires like this happening again.

The RCMP will be increasing patrols in the area and be on the watch for similar offenses.

Savinkoff reminds residents that trespassing on private property is an offense under the Petty Trespass Act and carries a penalty of $300.

Those who can help with this investigation can contact the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000 or Crimestoppers
