In an effort to stop victims of fraud from making bitcoin payments, the RCMP has launched an initiative that will see posters with a warning placed around Alberta.

Over the past year, RCMP are seeing more and more people falling victim to these kinds of bitcoin scams.

Corporal Laurel Scott of the Alberta RCMP says the need for this poster campaign is becoming more apparent.

"We hear very often about people losing their savings by making payments in bitcoin that are a scam and are fraudulent requests for payments and unfortunately people are falling for them. We are working very hard are putting out educational messages about not making payments through bitcoin, we decided to take this one step further and create a warning poster and place this at wherever these machines are located within the province,"

One prevalent scam is people receiving fraudulent calls from the Canada Revenue Agency and asking for Bitcoin payments.

"In early December the Red Deer detachment received the complaint of one of these fraudulent claims, while we do not see it a whole lot it still happens."

Scams continue to be prevalent throughout the province, primarily scams where culprits are representing themselves as agents from a government organization and requesting payment in Bitcoin.

It is not just one demographic that is seeing these fraudulent scams take place.

"There is no specific demographic for who falls for scams, Unfortunately scams are target at everyone and maybe the only difference is how much money the scammer can get from who is scamming such as older people might have more money compared to a younger person."

Due to increasing technology changes, it is becoming harder for RCMP to track and trace these scams with tools such as I.P blockers.
