Do you have what it takes to be royalty? The Cochrane Lions Queen and Princess are looking for successors, especially for the 50th anniversary of the Cochrane Lions Rodeo.

For the first time since 2010, there are no applicants to take over the royal titles.

The named Cochrane Lions Rodeo Queen and Princess are ambassadors to the Cochrane community and surrounding area, attending many rodeo and community events.

Susan Black, member of Rodeo Royalty Committee and Event Coordinator, says she would love to see some ladies who are outgoing with horsemanship skills come forth and apply.

"We really do require that you are able to ride very confidently because we ride in parades and we ride in rodeo grand entries."

Black adds this is the first year the committee hasn't received any applications but it has happened in surrounding communities.

"We are not the first rodeo that has happened to. Last year Airdrie had no competition, they didn't have applicants as well. Sundre has been in the same place as we are. Crossfield has been in the same place, Strathmore has been in the same place. Okotoks doesn't even have a Royalty program anymore. It''s a bit of a cyclical thing sadly."

You don't necessarily need to reside in the Cochrane area, but somewhat close is beneficial.

"Our commitment is quite large we do over 50 events a year between our community stuff and our rodeo stuff and all the other bits and pieces."

The skills learned from the Royalty program are invaluable, shares Black. Her own daughter, Shannon, was the 2012 Lions Rodeo Princess going on to become Stampede Princess. Black says the lessons learned were life changing.

"It's a great fabulous opportunity for young women to develop. We see everyone who has ever come in as royalty grow and mature, gaining confidence, and speaking skills throughout the year."

Besides a fantastic resume builder, the prize package is quite substantial as well, coming in at well over $6000 a piece.

"They get a saddle, a custom made Becker buckle, a custom made serapi, outfit them in boots, clothing, and coats, we sponsor their travel, they get custom hats from JRs hats."
