The fall municipal elections may seem far off to residents, but it's coming too soon for Rocky View County (RVC) officials.

A backlog of public hearings that need to be completed before the election has lead to the RVC council scheduling regular meetings every Tuesday from May 4 to Sept. 21, excluding August.

At its Mar. 23 meeting, county council was told, as of Mar. 5, 65 public hearing items needed to be scheduled. The administration estimated they would take about 181 hours to complete.

Besides numerous third-party planning applications, several significant county-initiated projects require public hearings, including six area structure plans and one inter-municipal development plan bylaw.

The backlog was in part impacted by meeting cancellations forced by COVID-19 restrictions.
